On the Road to the EU – Monitoring Equal Opportunities for Women and Men (EOWM)
in South Eastern Europe is a regional project implemented by the Network Women’s
Programme of OSI and the institutional partners of the Network from Macedonia,
Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, including Kosovo, and
Croatia.
In order to use the period of accession process effectively, partner NGOs
will monitor the status of equal opportunities in their countries, by means of
assessing to what extend the EOWM legislation and its implementation is in line
with EU standards.
The monitoring will concentrate on gender equality in
employment, based on selected EU Directives. The examined topics were:
equal pay for work of equal value
equal treatment at the workplace (equal access to employment, vocational
training, working conditions, and promotions)
the situation of self-employed
pregnancy and motherhood protection.
Goals:
To provide clear information on gender equality in SEE countries
To advocate for and improve future legislation and policy related to
equal opportunities for women and men
To raise awareness among the public about EU standards on gender
equality
To mobilize civil society, especially women’s NGOs and the public at
large to actively participate in shaping the European integration process
To help build cooperation between the women’s NGOs and governmental
institutions
To share existing experience and expertise among women organizations
engaged in the project
Based on the monitoring reports, a regional overview will be prepared. The
national monitoring reports and the overview will issue clear recommendations to
governments and international organizations, serving as effective tools for
advocacy at the national and EU levels. These will focus on how EWOM laws and
their implementation should be in line with EU standards, to ensure that gender
equality becomes reality in the countries monitored.
